When Rebecca Rice moved to Boston in 1985, she said it felt like she and many other struggling choreographers were ‘‘at the tail end of a wave.” She was producing dances, sure, but also paying for them with her credit card.
What a strange reflection to hear from a woman whose repertory is rooted in an intense understanding of music and informed by both classical ballet and modern American traditions. Tomorrow, Rice offers some of her most important pieces from the past five years, presented as a Boston Marquee event by the Bank of America Celebrity Series at Boston University’s Tsai Performance Center.
‘‘Many people in Boston still haven’t seen my work,” Rice said. ‘‘Now I’ll reach a big music audience. I think the Celebrity Series is very focused on classicism, which is very exciting.”
Music for her recent dances comes from Bach and Pachelbel as well as prominent living composers such as John Harbison, John Adams, Elena Ruehr, Arvo Part and even Boston cellist Emmanuel Feldman, who is featured on tomorrow’s program.
Rice’s affinity for Harbison’s music is particularly strong, and the program includes the premiere of a solo set to a commissioned score. ‘‘He’s been just wonderful,” she said. ‘‘He’s so lyrical and so complicated at the same time.”

Rebecca Rice Dance, tomorrow, 8 p.m., at Tsai Performance Center. Tickets: $20-$30; www.celebrity series.org or 617-482-6661.
